Furniture Delivery Options in Austin
Getting furniture delivered in Austin can range from seamless to frustrating depending on what you’re buying and who’s handling the delivery.
Store Delivery
Most Austin furniture stores offer delivery, but the experience varies significantly.
White-glove delivery (in-home setup, packaging removal) typically runs $150-300 in the Austin metro area. Stores like Room & Board, Crate & Barrel, and Restoration Hardware include this level of service as standard or for a flat fee.
Threshold delivery (to your door, no setup) is cheaper at $50-100 but means you’re handling assembly and placement yourself.
Free delivery is sometimes offered on orders over a certain amount, usually $999 or more. Read the fine print: “free delivery” often means threshold only.
Delivery Timelines
- In-stock items: 1-3 weeks for most Austin stores
- Made-to-order/custom: 8-16 weeks depending on the manufacturer
- IKEA delivery: Available within a few days, though the scheduling system can be clunky
Independent Delivery and Moving Services
For used furniture purchases (Marketplace, estate sales, Craigslist), you’ll often need to arrange your own delivery.
Austin-Specific Delivery Challenges
A few things that complicate furniture delivery in Austin:
- Apartments with stairs. Many Austin apartment complexes, particularly older ones in central neighborhoods, don’t have elevators. Delivery crews may charge extra for stairs, typically $25-50 per flight.
- Narrow doorways in older homes. Bungalows and ranch homes in neighborhoods like Travis Heights and Allandale often have doorways under 30 inches wide. Measure before you buy.
- I-35 traffic. Delivery windows that span the morning-afternoon transition can get derailed by traffic. If possible, schedule morning-only or afternoon-only windows.
- Gated communities. If you live in a gated community in northwest or southwest Austin, coordinate gate access in advance. Delivery crews don’t always have the patience to call and wait.
Protecting Your Purchase
- Inspect on delivery. Check for damage before the delivery crew leaves. Take photos of any issues.
- Keep packaging for 48 hours. Some stores won’t process damage claims on items where the packaging has been discarded.
- Note the return policy. Custom and sale items are often final sale. Know the policy before ordering, not after.
